Update on FBI Name Check Backlog

Recently, the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a statement which addressed the name check backlog. The agencies have stated that they are working together to process name checks as quickly as possible without compromising security or public safety. In order to make the existing name check system more efficient, the agencies have devised two strategies:

•· First, the USCIS and the FBI conducted a joint risk assessment, resulting in process improvements that will allow the agencies to focus on specific cases which have generated concern.

•· Second, the agencies have allocated additional funds to the process. Over the next year, the USCIS plans to pledge a total of $15.5 million in order to address the backlog.

The USCIS was careful to not that it will continue to require FBI name checks for the same categories of applicants it always has, and no case will be approved without a clear name check.
